Face mask demand has been steadily increasing in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue over the coming years. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends wearing a face mask both at home and at work.
Notably, face mask production is a highly complicated process with several variables. Auxiliary products such as ear loops, packaging, and metal strips, among others, must also be produced in addition to the masks.
The entire face mask production and supply chain are under a lot of strain owing to the pandemic. Companies scrambled their operating systems to speed up production in major manufacturing hubs such as China as pre-pandemic production capacities were insufficient to meet the meteoric demand increase.
China's companies are currently working at 110% of their capacity, although this production is inadequate to meet the mounting demand. The country's mask manufacturing ability has increased by 20 times since February, with masks varying from N-95 to cloth masks, further swaying worldwide face mask industry dynamics.
Face mask factories have gone through some modification to meet the increasing demand for face masks in industries such as cell phones, shoes, automobiles, diapers, and sanitary pads, among others. Face mask supply chains have been placed under a lot of strain as a result of these developments.
Government measures to assist Chinese firms in transitioning to face mask manufacturing hubs, as well as incentives, have resulted in a surge in new entrants. Provincial regulators are working around the clock to issue licenses to these newcomers. However, compliance with internationally recognized requirements and quality norms continues to be a source of concern.
Considering the geographical scope, Italy has relaxed restrictions for the time being and is now in phase 2, also known as the "living with the virus" phase. Masks are also required to be worn in order to prevent the spread of the virus, according to government regulations. Just 25% of pharmacies in the country had these capped masks for sale, as per the consumer groups.
Authorities in the country have also made a concerted effort to improve mask production, announcing plans to form a consortium of companies, further propelling global face mask market expansion. The Italian government's intention to accelerate the overall exit process of lockdown is expected to boost demand for face masks in the region.
Major contenders impacting global face mask market trends are Sinotextiles Corporation Ltd., SAS Safety Corp., Moldex Corporation, Mölnlycke Health Care, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, KOWA Company Ltd., Lenzing AG, McKesson Corporation, 3M Company, and Honeywell International Inc. among others.
